Only once a week should you water your outdoor cacti in the summer and only a few times in the winter. There are numerous edible cactus fruits, including prickly pear. Don’t count on it: eat your fruits but don’t count on them to stay healthy. Water lovers will be familiar with the fact that each of the five desert species drinks its own water. The fruit of the plant is a red or yellow berry that contains seeds. The flowers of the fishhook barrel cactus are yellow, orange, or red and bloom in the summer. The spines are arranged in rows and are up to 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) long. ![]() The plant has a green or blue-green stem that is covered in spines. The fishhook barrel cactus is a cylindrical or spherical cactus that can grow to be up to 6 feet (1.8 m) tall. It is a member of the family Cactaceae and the subfamily Cactoideae. The fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) is a type of cactus that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is necessary to cover and reduce the heat to a simmer. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan with the fruits, then add the fruit mixture to the boiling water. Make your own cactus water by thoroughly washing and cutting the fruits, then slicing them halfway through their diameter without completely cutting them in half. All of these cacti can be consumed in an emergency situation as long as you thoroughly prepare the water before drinking it. One of the most common cacti is the Fishhook Barrel Cactus, which is also known as the Saguaro cactus. There are a variety of cacti that can be used for drinking water. This fluid contains a high concentration of alkalis, which are noxious. A cowboy licks his ladle into a barrel containing a big, beach-shaped cactus, dips his finger in, and sips on a drink. When you drink from cactus, you won’t get water, but you will get stomachaches and vomiting. Can You Drink Water From A Saguaro Cactus ![]() If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any health concerns, consult with your doctor before consuming cactus water. Consult Your Doctor Before Drinking Cactus Water If You Are Pregnant Or Breastfeeding. ![]() There is even a cactus water that fights free radicals and promotes inflammation reduction. Overall, cactus water is nutritious because it provides potassium to help balance out your body’s sodium levels, allowing you to recover faster from a workout. Water the cactus plants every four to six weeks during the winter months. How frequently do you water cacti? If you live in a warm climate, you should water your cactus every 10 days or so. Can a cocka nova live on just water? Water can also be used to grow cacti, but this process is quite different and takes longer than growing other houseplants due to the need for at least a week for the cut side to dry and scar before the next step can be taken. They require less water during dormancy because their soils are completely dry. The cacti will begin to go dormant during the fall and end up dormant during the winter months. They may become dormant in the fall and winter and require only a trickle of water when the soil is completely dry. ![]() If you’re keeping cacti, how often you water them? If you live in a warm climate, it is recommended that you water your cactus every 10 to 14 days. Watering Your Cactus: How Often & How Much Because minerals in tap water build up in the soil, leaves can be affected. The water from rainwater should be used to water the plants rather than it being piped in. Watering too much will stunt the growth, whereas watering too little will shrivel the plant. Your cacti or Succulents will thrive if you water them frequently. It is known for five different types of cacti: dragon fruit, prickly pear, barrel, cholla, and saguaro, which are both for their fruit and for their plants. When it gets hot outside, cactus water is a great choice for hydration and antioxidants, as it is naturally high in antioxidants and low in calories and sugar.īecause it contains no artificial ingredients and is significantly more hydrating than regular drinking water or coconut water, it is an excellent choice for sports drinks. It turns out that the gooey stuff inside a cactus filters water contaminated with heavy metals or bacteria. If you add cactus to the water, it can improve its quality significantly. Here are four cacti that can provide water in a pinch.Ī cactus requires little or no water to survive. Cacti are often thought of as desert plants that store water in their fleshy stems, but did you know that some cacti can be used as a water source in an emergency? If you find yourself stranded in a desert with no water, certain types of cacti can provide hydration. GROSS: Now, I believe that Gladys Knight and the Pips got started at your brother Bubba's ninth birthday party. And my mom just taught us how to be innovative with our dress, you know, and that kind of thing. And I would go downtown - after I got old enough to ride the bus downtown - and I would go down to this little secondhand store. Well, she would pinch a little bit off of it, you know? And I had this little secondhand store that I had found. And if I wanted a new dress, which I did quite often. And after I got older and needed to do certain things - like, I was singing very early. KNIGHT: My mom actually put it in a savings account for us. GROSS: What'd you do with the $2,000 you won? Mack used to come up and tease us and do all of those things. So whenever they wanted - Little Gladys is what they used to call me - they would send somebody up to makeup, you know. I mean, I spent most of my time in the makeup room. KNIGHT: I mean, the lipstick was the bomb, I'm telling you. ![]() But it wasn't so much that I was getting wiped out by it. KNIGHT: And the whole idea was really exciting. And it was quite an experience because I'd never been to New York before, and I'd definitely never been on television before. ![]() So we went to New York, and we auditioned for them, and we got to be right on the show. And they wrote her back and said, yes, we would love to have her come. My mom wrote to them and asked them if I could be on the show and if I would get an audition with them. GROSS: Did you have stage fright? Were you afraid to perform, or was it easy for you? GROSS: So were you good? Did you think - I'm great I'm going to win I've nailed this? Did you think you were good? It was just about keeping us busy doing ballet or doing gymnastics or whatever it was that we could do. It was not so much about creating an avenue or getting us prepped for show business. My mom did not believe, as other members in our families, about, you know, idle minds. GROSS: Well, whose idea was it for you to do the show? KNIGHT: Now, that was quite an experience. Which I think of as the "Star Search" of the past, right? (Laughter). GROSS: Now, all your biographies say that when you were 7, you won first place on Ted Mack's "Original Amateur Hour". I did songs like "Ave Maria" and "Bless This House." And in the pop category, I did "Because Of You" and "Be My Love" and "Too Young." In the spiritual category, I did things like "Go Down, Moses" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." So I got to do all kinds of songs, and I loved it. And at the time, we weren't being so typecast in music as sometimes we are today. KNIGHT: Well, actually, my mom and dad had created with the church family a recital for me. GROSS: What was the church like, and what did you sing? GROSS: Now, you started singing in church, I guess, when you were 4 years old? Now, since you started your career as a child, I want to start our interview. TERRY GROSS: Gladys Knight, congratulations. It was part of the 15th anniversary celebration of City Arts & Lectures, which presents onstage conversations with leading figures in literature, criticism and the performing arts. Terry interviewed Gladys Knight that year in San Francisco. In 1996, Gladys Knight and the Pips were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In the 1970s, after leaving Motown, she sang deeply affecting adult ballads such as "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me." Before joining Motown, they recorded their first hit, "Every Beat Of My Heart," when Gladys was still in high school. Now is the time for the showdown, so let me give you the lowdown. While brown recluses are rare in South Carolina, they can be found in the mountainous regions of North Carolina. Redness, swelling and pain are among the most common symptoms, but it is possible to have a more severe reaction requiring emergent medical treatment. That said, brown recluse spiders do bite if they feel threatened. This spider also hides out in dark, dry places instead of skittering around in plain sight. They also hide under rocks or piles of wood.Īlthough it has a distinctive violin-shaped marking, the brown recluse has a short body, making it difficult to spot. It can take other forms, with the hourglass separated into two triangles or in a single mark or even dots. The female black widow has a distinctive red hourglass shape on its abdomen, but this pattern is not universal. Black widow bites are rarely fatal, but it is important to seek medical treatment right away if you are bitten by one. It is a very rare deposit, unique of its kind. ![]() The groupings of crystals that developed on the rock walls are due to the high temperatures of the hydrothermal liquids (between 50° and 850°) and the chemical composition that flooded the cavity. The Amethyst was formed inside this geoid, probably born from a gas bubble shaped by the very intense flow of magma. Compared to the small igneous rocks we are used to seeing, in this case it is a large space from which we were able to obtain a small number of blocks from which to cut unique slabs. This is an extraordinary discovery of extreme beauty. In some instances weather conditions can distort sonic booms.ĭepending on the aircraft's altitude, sonic booms reach the ground two to 60 seconds after flyover. ![]() Other maneuvers, such as deceleration and climbing, can reduce the strength of the shock. Some maneuvers, diving, acceleration or turning, can cause focusing of the boom. For steady supersonic flight, the boom is described as a carpet boom since it moves with the aircraft as it maintains supersonic speed and altitude. Ground width of the boom exposure area is approximately one mile for each 1,000 feet of altitude that is, an aircraft flying supersonic at 30,000 feet will create a lateral boom spread of about 30 miles. Boom intensity is greatest directly under the flight path, progressively weakening with greater horizontal distance away from the aircraft flight track. Overpressures in the sonic boom impact area, however, will not be uniform. Greater altitude also increases the boom's lateral spread, exposing a wider area to the boom. In general, the greater an aircraft's altitude, the lower the overpressure on the ground. The intensity and width of a sonic boom path depends on the physical characteristics of the aircraft and how it is operated. Duration of sonic boom is brief less than a second - 100 milliseconds (.100 seconds) for most fighter-sized aircraft and 500 milliseconds for the space shuttle or Concorde jetliner. The energy range of sonic boom is concentrated in the 0.1 - 100 hertz frequency range that is considerably below that of subsonic aircraft, gunfire and most industrial noise. Ground motion resulting from sonic boom is rare and is well below structural damage thresholds accepted by the U.S. And, typically, community exposure to sonic boom is below two pounds per square foot. Buildings in good repair should suffer no damage by pressures of less than 16 pounds per square foot. There is a probability that some damage - shattered glass, for example, will result from a sonic boom. In recent tests, the maximum boom measured during more realistic flight conditions was 21 pounds per square foot. The boom was produced by a F-4 flying just above the speed of sound at an altitude of 100 feet. The strongest sonic boom ever recorded was 144 pounds per square foot and it did not cause injury to the researchers who were exposed to it. Peak overpressures for U-waves are amplified two to five times the N-wave, but this amplified overpressure impacts only a very small area when compared to the area exposed to the rest of the sonic boom. The U-wave, or focused boom, is generated from maneuvering flights, and its pressure wave is shaped like the letter "U." U-waves have positive shocks at the front and rear of the boom in which the peak overpressures are increased compared to the N-wave.įor today's supersonic aircraft in normal operating conditions, the peak overpressure varies from less than one pound to about 10 pounds per square foot for a N-wave boom. The N-wave is generated from steady flight conditions, and its pressure wave is shaped like the letter "N." N-waves have a front shock to a positive peak overpressure which is followed by a linear decrease in the pressure until the rear shock returns to ambient pressure. There are two types of booms: N-waves and U-waves. It is the magnitude of this peak overpressure that describes a sonic boom. The sound heard on the ground as a "sonic boom" is the sudden onset and release of pressure after the buildup by the shock wave or "peak overpressure." The change in pressure caused by sonic boom is only a few pounds per square foot - about the same pressure change we experience on an elevator as it descends two or three floors - in a much shorter time period. If the plane makes a sharp turn or pulls up, the boom will hit the ground in front of the aircraft. From the perspective of the aircraft, the boom appears to be swept backwards as it travels away from the aircraft. When the aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, these pressure waves combine and form shock waves which travel forward from the generation or "release" point.Īs an aircraft flies at supersonic speeds it is continually generating shock waves, dropping sonic boom along its flight path, similar to someone dropping objects from a moving vehicle. ![]() An aircraft traveling through the atmosphere continuously produces air-pressure waves similar to the water waves caused by a ship's bow. It is caused by an object moving faster than sound - about 750 miles per hour at sea level. Sonic boom is an impulsive noise similar to thunder. ![]() The amount you can expect to actually receive for your 2013 Honda if you sell it privately. For some reason, the latent memory of this recipe came back to mind last week, and I went on a search for it. A great thing for a snow bound weekend, such as this one, but for practical reasons it’s tough to make as a regular habit. My only complaint is it’s a long project that requires a lot of tending. My favorite method has always been to make a poolish first, which makes a gorgeous, chewy bread with a crispy crust. Over the years I’ve done quite a bit of perfecting and experimenting of different methods and recipes. There is no explaining it, it just seems to happen. Without thought or plan, I find myself reaching for yeast every January and February. It’s hard to explain why, but it’s somewhere in the “monarch butterfly migration” part of my brain. It has been a long standing tradition of mine to bake bread in the early part of the year. When I moved last year it got lost in the shuffle, but I never forgot the idea. From time to time I would look at it and think that I should give it a try, but never did. I tore out the recipe from that printing, and it kicked around my office for years.
